George's Diary Day 3

Wellington camp 2014.
Carter observatory.
Day 3.

One of the highlights of our Wellington camp was the visit to Carter Observatory.
From the outside it did not look to special, but once inside the incredible digital planetarium our minds were changed. Once we were in our comfy seats the circular screen on the ceiling switched on and space was right before our eyes. One of the other cool features of the room was the screen could rotate and zoom in and out on the planets we wanted to see, Also at the back of the room was a helpful guide who narrated our journey through space with great detail.

After our space tour we went to our classroom where we were greated by a friendly guy named Troy. Once settled we were asked questions about which planets were closest to the sun when we couldn’t answer he gave us easy and understandable answers.

Once our lesson was finished we explored the gift shop after about ten minutes we exited the observatory our heads filled with knowledge.

Alien Invasion By Tia M

At 12:30 on Thursday 25 September, Room 11 made their way to Capital E On Tv Studio. There we learned to make a movie, got taught how to operate cameras, lights and setting. We then got straight into it. Sola, our costume designer, dressed everyone in crazy and funky clothes. In the end, everyone really enjoyed acting and if not acting, operating cameras and lights. To reach our awesome movie search up ALien Invasion Mapua School on youtube.

Kawakawa By Sierra

The kawakawa or Pepper tree.

When we went on camp we went to a place call Zealandia which is a park fenced to keep out pests and leave a safe home environment for native species. One of the things that i learned was about the plant called Kawawa. We were chewing these as we went round this is what i found out and learned about then.
The kawa kawa has jointed stems and zigzag branches. The leaves are shaped like love hearts and are usually covered in loads of bug holes. The leaves also have veins that range from dark green to yellow-green colours The Kawakawa  makes spikes of flowers that change from yellow to a bright orange at summertime. The flowers are food for birds.
The Kawakawa is traditional medicine plant used by maori.  You can make tea from the leaves or roots which is normally pepper tea. It is used as a tonic, for bladder problems, boils, bruises or general pain relief because it nums. Plus this plant tastes like pepper but is kinda tangy and weird tasting.

-This is what a Kawakawa or pepper tree looks like.
-It is native to NewZealand
-Its found all throughout NewZealand

Molly's camp poem

So a few weeks ago, as you may have heard
Our very own Room 11 flew off like a bird
To frolick in Wellington, as you might say
And I’m here to tell you, a little about our stay…
So there we all were waiting for our camp
When we heard the sad news our plans were a bit damp
We weren’t to go to the zoo, or the ferry that day
But were waylaid by bad weather, a bit of a delay
Nobody worry , Sharon’s on the case
Instead we stayed in Picton, an opportunity we embraced
Visiting the airforce museum, and a movie too
We made up for our losses, and gained some hot chips, right on cue

Early next morning, not too early to hate
To catch the ferry, across the Cooks Straight
Some people looked green, others a little red
Most just wanted, to be back in their beds
After a lovely cruise, with high ocean winds
We arrived in Wellington, where we did plenty of things
But what I can say is we did do a lot
With plenty of enjoyment, more often than not
Capital E hosted us for
3D movie making, snow, birds, and more
Then of course rollerblading and rock climbing as well
Which everyone thought was completely swell
The next day brought a tuatara to us
From our Zealandia friends, definitely a must

And then we went on to Carter Observatory
With their crazy, rounded planetary movie screen
And of course who could forget
Te Papa! The best museum ever, I’d be willing to bet
Whales and boats, tikis and more
This place was definitely not a bore
So what else did we do, oh yes of course
H2O Xtreme we shouted till we were hoarse
Our parliament visit, was somewhat exciting
The body guards looked, to be ready for fighting
Unfortunately we didn’t see
Our famous PM Mr John Key

Then back again to Capital E
For our Alien invasion this is Presenter Molly
They had cameras and costumes, actors on suite
This trip was a fantastic treat
Oh and what about our Amazing Race
A favourite in so many peoples case
Walking round Wellington all on our own
Some of the adults were completely thrown

And what can I say about WOW but wow!
Those dresses where fab the most fashionable gowns
So all of us tired sleeping on our feet
Back on the ferry to collapse in a heap
Sailing and cruising on the shifty plain
We finally saw old South island again
And now here we are, with stories to tell
We’ll remember it forever, and a bit more, as well

WELLINGTON CAMP 2014

Day 4
We jumped out of bed with a grin on our faces and hurried down stairs to have a talk about what was on the agenda for today.
We headed towards parliament and had our bags checked on the way in. We sat down at the 8 rows of seats, and began talking about what parliament was like back in the day, and lots of other really interesting things. We slowly made it around to the debating chamber and chatted about debates.
After that we had our own little debate about plastic bags and why they were good or not so good on the environment, we dressed up and started debating. We had lunch and started heading to Capital E on tv for our Alien Invasion movie clip.

We sat down and talked about our jobs that were needed for the movie, My job was to put the script in front of the camera so they could read it off there. We finally finished the movie and it was great!

We all slithered over to WoW because we were a bit tired. we waited outside and these weird mime things came out of this advertised car!? They started to polish it with their breathe and a rag. They got Nathan to jump into the car and wait in there until they were finished polishing it! The girl mime came over to me and started to rest her head against my shoulder but i didn’t like it so i pulled away!! So we walked into the arena and got our seats, we were all so close together.

The show started with a BOOM!!! colours and flashes of light everywhere the first category was the childrens part in WoW! All the dresses over all were AMAZING but not just the dresses the bras to!

                                              Diary entry

                                             Thursday 25 September

Today I woke up and got breakfast a little later than normal which was nice. Then we got packed up and walked to parliament. There we were shown into a few rooms, like the debating chamber, and then we went and got dressed up for a role play. I was the leader of the Kiwi fruit party!

After that we walked to Capital E onTV, where again we got dressed up and and practised for our alien invasion movie, and if I may say so myself, we did a pretty good job. During the second run through one of scientists fell off his chair.

After Capital E we walked over the bridge and sat out side the art gallery ready to be told what to do for the Amazing race. During the Amazing race we had to run all around Wellington to find all sorts of things that were on our list. When my group finally arrived back at the hostel we were told that we had to use public transport so we ran back out and caught the bus!

Then we went to WOW and what can I say the dresses were amazing but not only the dresses but the bras too. The people who made those dresses must be very talented and I really hope I can go again some day!

Day One.

Today we woke up to the news camp was postponed, But we still had to pack our bags a bring them to school. I walked to school struggling to carry both my bags. Then our class was called in to discuss our plans for the day. We had to think about what we could do instead, we scanned the internet for ideas and came up with a few options. We then had to call the companies to book what we could do and if we could get a discount, we groveled and begged and everyone got a discount. We had morning tea, packed our bags into the cars while Sharon finished our timetable.

We got in the cars to Blenheim the car ride was long but but we got to Pelourus  Bridge quickly, it felt like the ride was shorter than it really was we got to the bridge and stretched our legs then we had lunch and had a group photo and continued to Blenheim. We saw the wineries and knew we were almost there. we arrived at the museum and had our tour. Me, Sophie and Karen had a private tour and had to get a hurry up by the rest of the class.

Then we left to the cinema to watch the movie Step up 5, but we still had a while left before the movie started so we played seaweed in one of the car parks. Then we went back to the cinema to watch the movie everyone brought sweets, a drink and some popcorn. It was a really good movie and even starred a New Zealander. When the movie had finished we drove to Picton and got settled in at The Top Ten Holiday Park. I was in a cabin with Sophie and Sylvie. Everyone had a good day even though our plans had changed.

The Academic Quiz comes around every year and the Year 7 and 8s have the opportunity to push their skills to the limit.
The quiz not only has math and subjects from school but other more subjects like sports, economy and music so you don’t have to know about every subject as you will have a team of 5 other students who know what they are doing as well as supporting you.
This year Mapua School submitted two teams. A year seven team and a year eight team. On the night of the 11th June the two teams set off to Nelson Intermediate. They arrived there and were welcomed warmly and got to choose where to sit. The leaders of the two teams were Georgie (year 7) and Emily (year 8). Each table had a bowl of sweets and a champagne bottle full of water and a couple of sheets of paper for the answers on the subjects that we had researched. These subjects were the Olympic Games Ancient and Modern, the Wall Street Crash, Fictional Languages, The Future of Science, The “Back to the Future” Movies, Maori Myths and Legends, The Millennium and The Swinging Sixties. As part of the quiz the teams were asked to dress up according to their team name. The Year 8’s theme was “Purple Revival” (last year they were “Purple People Eaters”) so they all came in purple and the Year 7s came as “The Mad Hatters,” with lots of crazy colourful hats on their heads. By the time everyone arrived, the noise was horrendously loud and the excitement was bouncing off the walls. Then the quiz began and the noise lowered to quiet murmurs. At first when the questions started the nerves rocketed up to the ceiling. Once that round was over everyone was more settled and laughter and jokes were spreading like a virus. Everyone was having fun and enjoying themselves. Soon people came round with chips and more water. The questions got harder and harder but the atmosphere stayed fun, if you looked around you saw smiling faces. Soon they handed in their final paper and waited excitedly (as well nervously) for the results. The host took to the stage and announced the winners. The Purple Revival came 6th and The Mad Hatters came 5th. Then came best dressed and most creative answers, the creative answers awards went to the groups who had the funniest, wackiest answers. The Academic Quiz was a overall success for both Mapua teams and we all enjoyed the night greatly.

ManHunt, A Story by Fergus.

Prologue

Nick crept along the landing of the third floor the footsteps following him up the stairs were getting closer coming up the stairs getting louder and louder, he pulled the silenced shotgun off his shoulder and aimed at the stairwell the footsteps continued to grow louder  they were coming they weren’t trying to be quiet they wanted him to hear them, feel fear, they wanted him dead.
A shadow rounded the corner of the stair well. ‘This could get messy’ Nick  thought to himself.

1. Terrorists

4 Days Earlier...

9:41am

Nick Brown sat listening to the grumbling of the planes fuselage. He looked out the window at auckland international airport, the plane gained speed and zipped down the runway. Nick felt even more lonely as the plane lifted off the ground and soared into the air, he was being sent to live with his old grandmother now that his parents were dead. His hair was like a brown waterfall collapsing over the slopes hiding one of his blue eyes. He was a muscular build for a 12 year old and loved wildlife and the outdoors. His Grandmother lived on a pinnacle of land reaching out to the sea in America. There were lots of cool islands way out to sea that you couldn’t see unless you took a boat out there and sailed about 500k’s out you would be able to see it in the distance. Auckland was now disappearing behind him, every metre of distance put between him and his birth place made him feel worse and all he could do was watch. He wished that in his parents will, he was sent to his mother's parents in california, but his dad said otherwise, so he was being sent to his dads parents in  and probably would be home schooled or not even taught things at all. Nick twirled the flint necklace he was given by his dad’s dad around and around but then he realised that sulking and feeling sorry for himself would do nothing so he leant back and started to doze off as he was in mid sleep he thought about his parents and what fun things he could have done with his life If they were still alive, then fell into a world of black.

4:15pm
Nick woke hearing a jolt as five men ran down the aisle to the cockpit. Nick looked and watched them run into the cockpit there was a yell then a gunshot. Nick shook with horror but the captain being dead was the least of his worries the plane dipped down towards the sea, Nick looked out the window and saw a beach at least a 5 kilometres swim from the planes current location. Nick stood up and listened to the screams and the yelling of two terrorists, one pointed at him and charged down the aisle at Nick.
Nick turned to run but then saw a fire axe on the wall grabbed it and turned to face off the man charging towards him.
The man took one look at the axe then looked at Nick, “ok little boy, put down the axe and I wont hurt you” His grin spread wide showing a golden tooth, but Nick knew he would so he charged forwards and jammed the axe in the ground in front of the man causing him to trip. Nick saw his chance and took it like a 5 year old being giving candy, he thrust his elbow down on top of his assailants head knocking him out first hit. Nick jumped over the man sprinting down the aisle toward another terrorist having a row with a woman cradling her baby.
The man lunged at the baby but the woman furiously thrust a punch into the man’s jaw and anyone watching easily knew it was broken. As he fell back into the aisle another desperate terrorist came running in from a toilet down the back of the plane and ripped the axe out of the ground, then without thinking the man swung the axe at a window then to the shock of everyone on board it smash through the window and lodged itself into the wing right wing.
As the wind sucked at the people inside the airplane, Nick was desperately holding on to an unbuckled seat belt he felt his hands slip but refused to give up, but then he heard a scream and watched as a boy was ripped out of his seat by a terrorist then thrown down the aisle towards the window.
Nick thought fast and stuck an arm out and grabbed the boy by his belt all most slipping off the seat belt, the boy screamed as a bag hurtled down the aisle hitting his nose causing blood to spew out. Nick pulled the boy over to him and put him in the seat the buckled the belt making sure it was tight before turning to the cockpit and pulling himself up the aisle he reached the door and flung it open. Two of the terrorists in the cockpit had no idea that the window had smashed so when the door opened they flew out of their seats and down the aisle to the window. Nick snatched the captains radio and stuttered to the passengers, “everyone stay calm and tighten your seat belts and get into the bracing position and be ready for impact.”

As the planes altitude rapidly dropped down below two thousand metres Nick’s hand slipped and he was pulled down the aisle as he tore at the ground hoping for a grip but found none. The plane was coming in at nine hundred metres of the water as Nick’s legs were sucked through the window he felt a hand grab him he turned his head to see one of the terrorists gripping him smiling evilly at him then he felt him push him through the window but he desperately grabbed the wing the plane. They were only hundreds of metres off the ground then fifty then forty, thirty, twenty, ten, then he let go as the plane crashed into the sea metres below him. He tumbled down and crashed into the sea then his world became black.

Matariki

On the 3rd of June 2014 something special occured at Mapua school, The Mapua students as well as other Whanaū joined the teachers and staff to celebrate the 'Moāri New Year' or 'Matariki' For the First time in Mapua School.

Matariki is signalled in the middle of the winter when seven stars ( also known as 'The Seven Sisters Of Matariki') appear in the sky and signal the start of the Moari year.

For our celebration we kicked off the ceremony with a game of 'Ki o Rahi' where the Adults showed the Kids who was boss with a stunning win of 23-7 in favour of the Adults. Then the Adults where herded out of the gates as we started the ceremony with a mini whakatau.First we had the karanga from the teachers welcoming the Adults and visitors into the School Grounds and the reply came from Lara Hania.

Then the perfomances really kicked off with the Kapa Haka group performing multiple perfomances like 'Te Waka' and 'Poi e' The Senior Band 'Bullet Proof' showed off their talent playing 'Waving Flag' By Kn'aan and the Sherlock Family playing one of their original songs. Lara shared the story of creation with us.

There was delicous food on offer like roast kumara, fried bread and good old sausages,
Then all the parents went and had a wonder around the class room as I took the stage and perfomed one of my songs on my guitar.

In the end each of the familys took a candle each and walked down to the beach to place their candle on top of the giant drift wood and stone koru sculpture.

This was all a great experience and we all thoroughly enjoyed it and hope it becomes an annual event on the school calendar.

Movie Night

Movie night was a fun thing that a group of year eights organized. I myself only helped on the night working at the cafeteria and organizing the movie Frozen for the younger kids. My help started when we began to set up at two o-clock, we had to first get the chairs and pillows set up then the movies had to be tested in the laptops to make sure they weren't going to break down in the final seconds, but we did have a problem with one laptop. Luckily we could get a new one! Once that was done it was time to set up the cafeteria, we had to lug loads of fizz across the school while buddy time was taking place out on the court. The tables were set up in a semi circle then we loaded the popcorn and sherbet onto them and put the drinks in the middle. Finally we set up the ticket table and cleaned the rooms and connected the laptops to the TV.  We were ready.

Once the bell had rang we had a giant line of kids waiting to get into the movies. Suddenly a wave of hungry children burst into the food area and pushed towards the tables, I stood there for awhile taking orders and retrieving what they had asked for but then I was told to go get my movie going. I chucked some money in the box in the middle and grabbed some food off the tables before sprinting off to get Frozen running.
Once the laptop had started the film Jason and my self sat down and monitored the movie and fixed the occasional bug in the system.

After the movie had ended the clean up began and we had to vacuum and mop up many spills and bits of food on the floor, it took us half an hour to clean up almost everything on the floor but we still had to bring in the tables. Once the tables in we took turns in celebrating our successes once the noise had died down Sharon thanked us for helping and we all began the journey home.

Thank you To everyone who helped us with the movie night. It helped us gain over $500.00 to our Wellington camp.

Our "Huts"

Last week we wrote memoirs. We read a memoir by Gavin Bishop about the making of huts when he was a child and we decided to base our memoirs on huts too. We read some at assembly last week so we will put up different ones. We hope you enjoy them.

The Puppy Hut by Molly

Me and my brother love making huts. Huts by the stream, huts that fall on top of us, huts with proper wood and nails. We loved them all but our pride and joy, our finest hour was the vast mansion of rugs that we set up in the lounge. it took hours to find, drape, peg and hang all of our materials. As usual we argued about every thing.
"That's my bed!"
"Well, I'm here now!"
" Well move!"
" No I won`t!"
" Will too!"
"Will not!"
" Will too!"
We would go on for hours. Normally our huts ended with us going off in a huff and leaving the mess to our Mum. But this den was demolished by our new puppy Scooby. Boom, Crash and legendary mansion was in pieces. The result was the same though. We both went off in a huff and left the mess to our Mum.

Hut Making by Sylvie

Pillow, blankets, couch and big long cushion. Inside, outside, under the trampoline. Carefully making the cushion stand up right, piling on the blankets making sure they will not fall through, then carefully climbing in, pulling in the pillows to make our beds. Everything is quiet. Don`t make a sound or we will be eaten by the scary monsters outside. Wait till morning now carefully climb out again. Flop! It all falls in.
" You made it fall over!"
"No I didn`t!"
"Yes you did!"
 "No I didn`t!"
This would go on and on for a long time till Mum came in and it was all over.

Huts by Reece
I love making huts on stormy days. Especially huts made out of mattresses and blankets and cushions. We would spend a bit of time on the huts. Amelia and I would fight where we wanted to sleep and where our bed was until a pillow flew over.
" WE'RE UNDER ATTACK!"
My Poppa would throw pillows at us to try and destroy it. Until we got our Nerf guns out and open fire. We would shoot for hours to try and win. Until he got the big guns out... Scared in fear Amelia ans I would hide behind the left wall, waiting for the bomb to hit. we quickly came up with a plan.
" You go around the kitchen"
" No you"
"Who made you the boss?"
"Fine, whatever!"
As the argument was over, the bomb hit. It was a big banana. Wow so much damage! Then I would shoot him in the head and my nan would say pack up.

Whenua Iti
by Fergus

Fun, challenging, exciting, blood pumping etc. That is only one  of the hundreds of what I could say Whenua iti is like it is the most amazing experience for the outdoors I’ve had in a year- it is great.
Week 1: The arrival
When we pulled up at Whenua Iti I gasped- in the distance I saw a 15 meter tall tower, a high ropes, a trapeze and a huge field for games and activities. We came to the small hall of Whenua iti, the sleeping and talking area. We started with a talk about leadership that our three hosts Jo, Johnny and Charlie. After our talk they told us to get into two groups splitting Max and I to either ends of the room then split the rest of the group. They told us my group was doing the climbing wall and Max’s were doing the trapeze and we would swap after lunch. We had our morning tea then set off to our first adventure... the tower was huge.
I teamed up with Reuben and Dylan and we went to the hard climb. The instructors told us to start climbing when we were ready. I told Dylan I was ready, then started up the tower at a great pace. Only 10 seconds later I was struggling climbing on the hard climb. Finally I got past the tricky bit but the worst was yet to come when I was 3 meters from the top 12 meters above the ground things got tricky there were no hand holds anywhere I had to jump I jumped got to the top then got lowered back down Dylan and Reuben had their turns we watched the others then we went back to the hall for lunch.

After lunch we went to the trapeze, we got geared up then I went first I jumped for the bar but missed. I watched everyone else for the rest of the activity but then Charlie asked if I would like another go. I was ready I got my gear back on raced up the ladder and got to the top of the poll for a few seconds I stood there staring into space then I jumped I felt my fingers curl around the bar I had DONE IT, I felt great grabbing that poll the last chance of the day that I had, I had done it. We all went back to the hall the first day of Whenua iti was great I loved it and I could wait to do it next week!

I don’t have time to talk about the other weeks but I'll do a quick summary about them.
Week 2 we learnt games and taught them to the rest of our group then after lunch we had an activity each and my group did the high ropes after that we had a talk with the other group then came back to school.

Week 3 we shared the games we shared with our own group to the other group then we went to the activity the other group went to last week the flying Kiorea (rat). We were hoisted up into the air and swung around for awhile then came back down. After that we went back to the hall had a talk and went back to school.

Week 4 We arrived at the hall and talked about what we were doing today. We got on the Whenua iti bus and drove to the beach 5 min off kaiteriteri. When we arrived we were greeted by 2 DOC rangers they lead us to the bushes on the sand dunes. It was covered by gorse and shrubs so we got to work right away we pulled out all the weeds then planted some new bushes and trees. We thanked the DOC rangers and boarded the bus and drove back to Whenua iti When we arrived we thanked the Whenua iti staff and said our goodbyes then left Whenua iti and headed back to school for the last time.

TRYATHLON
Run, bike, swim. Right... easy, eh?

The school tryathlon was the second house event of the year. Nerves were high and the adrenaline was pumping. Once we were in our togs, covered from head to toe with sunblock, with our heavy helmets on our heads, and sitting in our year groups, the competition began.

It was really tough. We ran what seemed like a million laps of the field, then we jumped onto our bikes as FAST as we could - even if our bikes weren’t in the right gear. We went as fast as our little legs would carry us, and then we dumped our bikes in a massive
pile and sprinted to the pool, even though by that point we could barely feel our legs!!! We ran through the gate and jumped into the pool. It was freezing!  Everyone swam faster so they could get out of the pool quicker, which was a good thing, of course!

We watched all the races, cheering madly for the people in our House, as well as our brothers and sisters. Some people took photographs. Others created chants to support their friends and Houses. It was a lot of fun. Time kept ticking and by the end of the event
we were shattered. We perked up when we heard Mr Taylor’s voice over the speakers say, “It’s time for the awards!”. We all swivelled round to face him. Certificates!!!

The top three in each year group got a certificate (and a round of applause, obviously!).
Lots of people got out their cameras, and the parents got out their cellphones so they could take photos of their children. It was a great moment.

After that, everyone got changed out of their damp togs, and searched for their bikes. While the juniors went to fetch their scooters (they rode scooters instead of biking) the bigger kids went to the massive pile of bikes.  The mish-mash of bikes kept everyone occupied for a while but when we had put them all away, the noise and excitement died down. Soon after the bell rang and we staggered out to lunch.

So there went another successful tryathlon at Mapua School, where everyone tried to be all they can.  The tryathlon was an overall success where the weather was great and the sky was blue. Where the sporty ones showed what they could do. But the less athletic ones just did their best. Everyone supported each other and swam hard, biked well and ran showing promise. This year’s tryathlon was the best there’s been, so keep it up and next year with luck we’ll get even better.

Every year Mapua School and the Mapua Playcentre organise a fair to celebrate Easter and raise money for learning equipment and each year people flood to the domain to enjoy the day. In the past we have had roadblocks all the way to Appleby!
This year the weather forecast wasn't looking too good and it did start raining later on in the day but that didn't stop people coming.
The school Kapa Haka group started off the performance on the stage followed by the ukulele groups. Both performances “ wowed ” the audience  and showed them how talented Mapua School students really are. Then the stage had various artists performing, our famous chocolate wheel and the raffles until the end of the day.
Mapua School had a few stalls, including Brick`a`Brac and Face painting. We also had the cafe, which had delicious smells and tastes coming out of it all day.
We hope you enjoyed the Easter Fair if you went to it and we hope you will come next year too.
Photos will follow soon.

Hey guys sorry there hasn't been many posts this term, this is due to it being such an explosive start to the year, There has been loads of Art, House Leader Speeches, Swimming Sports and loads and loads more.
As the year eights we have a lot of responsibility resting on our shoulders, We as leaders have to not just organise games and activites but we also have to set a good example to the younger cendicate. To do this we have to think how they will react to our actions and if they will copy, But they won't just copy the bad stuff we might do but they also will get inspired by us, and for the good or bad they will be inspired by us, the seniors of the school, The Might Year Eights but most of all..... Mapua School's leaders.
We will lead them into a brand new year. One that will be more Creative, Sportier and Smarter than ever before.
See you soon

Reuben Prestidge.
