George's Diary Day 3
Wellington camp 2014.
Carter observatory.
Day 3.
One of the highlights of our Wellington camp was the visit to Carter Observatory.
From the outside it did not look to special, but once inside the incredible digital planetarium our minds were changed. Once we were in our comfy seats the circular screen on the ceiling switched on and space was right before our eyes. One of the other cool features of the room was the screen could rotate and zoom in and out on the planets we wanted to see, Also at the back of the room was a helpful guide who narrated our journey through space with great detail.
After our space tour we went to our classroom where we were greated by a friendly guy named Troy. Once settled we were asked questions about which planets were closest to the sun when we couldn’t answer he gave us easy and understandable answers.
Once our lesson was finished we explored the gift shop after about ten minutes we exited the observatory our heads filled with knowledge.
Alien Invasion By Tia M
At 12:30 on Thursday 25 September, Room 11 made their way to Capital E On Tv Studio. There we learned to make a movie, got taught how to operate cameras, lights and setting. We then got straight into it. Sola, our costume designer, dressed everyone in crazy and funky clothes. In the end, everyone really enjoyed acting and if not acting, operating cameras and lights. To reach our awesome movie search up ALien Invasion Mapua School on youtube.
Kawakawa By Sierra
The kawakawa or Pepper tree.
When we went on camp we went to a place call Zealandia which is a park fenced to keep out pests and leave a safe home environment for native species. One of the things that i learned was about the plant called Kawawa. We were chewing these as we went round this is what i found out and learned about then.
The kawa kawa has jointed stems and zigzag branches. The leaves are shaped like love hearts and are usually covered in loads of bug holes. The leaves also have veins that range from dark green to yellow-green colours The Kawakawa makes spikes of flowers that change from yellow to a bright orange at summertime. The flowers are food for birds.
The Kawakawa is traditional medicine plant used by maori. You can make tea from the leaves or roots which is normally pepper tea. It is used as a tonic, for bladder problems, boils, bruises or general pain relief because it nums. Plus this plant tastes like pepper but is kinda tangy and weird tasting.
-This is what a Kawakawa or pepper tree looks like.
-It is native to NewZealand
-Its found all throughout NewZealand
